Web hosting for a better future

It may it odd to post about webhosting on a future gadgets blog but I have seen a lot of discussions on webmaster forums about serious hosting problems. So you will find web hosting tutorials and tips in this article.

Problem no. 1

WordPress blog like this one are very popular, but they have a problem: they consume a lot of server processor and the majority of web hosting companies will suspend your account if you use more than 25% of processor.

Tip no. 1 install and activate WP Super Cache plugin. WP Super Cache is a static caching plugin for WordPress. It generates html files that are served directly by Apache without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts. By using this plugin you will speed up your WordPress blog significantly.

Problem no. 2

Many hosting companies brag themselves with "unlimited bandwidth". This is a scam!

I was talking to support people of a "unlimited bandwidth" hosting and the discussion was something like that:

Me: Do you offer unlimited bandwidth?

Support: Yes.

Me: And if I have a popular blog with 3000-4000 visitors per day which needs a lot of bandwidth what it will happen?

Support: We shut down your account.

Nice answer no? The bandwidth was unlimited but if you need to much they will cancel your account and you’ll probably loose all your files from the server.

Tip no. 2

Be careful if the offer sounds too good to be true. Before using your credit card search for hosting reviews and for web hosting rating.

And always talk to the support team of the hosting company. Ask them the following questions:

  • How long has the web host been in business? Look for a an old host. If they are in business for several years they must offer at list an acceptable service.
  • Does the web host own its data center? It is preferable to choose on with its one data center - they have more control this way.
  • How many upstream Internet providers does the web host have? More means better.
  • Does the web host provide 24/7/365 phone and email support? Choose one with a good support. This is extremely important.
  • Does the web host automatically backup customer web sites in case of data loss? How often? It is great if they make backups for you, but you must download the backups on your computer. If something goes wrong with the hosting provider and you need to change it you must have the backups on your computer to restore the sites.
  • What is the web host’s billing policy? When you must pay, what happens if you don’t pay on time.
  • Does the web host provide the features that you need for your web site? I recommend Cpanel for easy server administration and Fantastico for installing scripts.
  • Does the web host have the products and services to handle your growth? If your site is a success your hosting company can offer you higher plans like the ones with bigger bandwidth or dedicated servers.
  • Tip no. 3

Take a look at web hosting awards but don’t base your entire decision on them.
